The Space in Between Exhibition

Who gets to author working-class stories, and who decides how they are represented? The Space In Between is a collaborative photographic project led by Ruth Dillon exploring authorship, representation and the politics of visibility through photography. Working collaboratively with people in recovery through The Lifeboat Recovery Community Hub CIC , the project challenges documentary traditions that have historically framed working-class lives through crisis, deficit and the detached gaze of documentary photography. Instead, photography becomes a process of making meaning together, where images, text and digital media emerge through collaboration and lived experience. As a working-class artist, Dillon’s practice occupies the tensions between privilege and exclusion, examining questions of cultural authority: who is granted visibility and access, who gets to produce culture, whose knowledge is recognised, and how photography can shift from representation towards shared authorship. Supported by The Arts Society and Onward Homes , The Space In Between invites audiences to reconsider who makes culture, who is seen within it and who gets to define the stories we tell. A big thank you to Faye Maloney founder of The Lifeboat who helped make this happen. Open 7 November until 30 November 2026 Monday to Saturday 9:30am – 4:30pm
